The Prophet (saw) said, ‘The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this’, and he (saw) held his two fingers together to illustrate. [Bukhari]

The new orphanage in Balaka district was opened on the 15th of Shaban 1443. By the grace of Allah, we have welcomed the first 20 orphans into their new home. It’s a life-turning event for them to come into this new environment but we pray that the darkness in their lives is replaced with light, love, happiness, and hope.
Rural areas are amongst the most impoverished as the villagers are deprived of external support due to the location and logistics in accessing those areas. Green Crescent Aid UK has been working in southern Malawi for many years and has a well-established base in the southern regions. Our team has been able to reach out to many villagers with much needed aid that have witnessed external support before.

When deciding on the location of the orphanage, our team conducted research in many areas and had the choice of building an orphanage in the city or taking the facilities to the doorstep of the needy. Building in the city would have its own benefits such as easier logistics, access to materials, and bringing in construction equipment would be simple. However, with your support and duas, our team decided to bring the same standards of city buildings and build the orphanage in a rural village within the Balaka district.

The orphanage complex consists of 6x blocks for hostel rooms (each has 2x showers and 2x toilets), classroom block, multipurpose hall, social lounge, prayer room, large playground, dining room and a large kitchen. All blocks are constructed with steel beams, iron roofing, internal/external plastered walls, ceilings and tiled throughout.

The hostel rooms are equipped with bunk beds with quality mattress, blankets, wardrobes, and variety of toiletries. These children have never slept in a bed before nor had shower facilities so these will be luxuries for them (something we take for granted in the UK). The classroom block is equipped to a higher standard than the government schools in villages. With decorated walls, quality tables, chairs, and whiteboard for the children to learn in optimal conditions. The playground and social lounge are important for the children’s physical health, growth, relaxation, enjoyment and to have fun in.  The prayer room is designed as a mini-Masjid so the children can strengthen their connection with the lord.

How you can help

Running costs

Your donation will be going towards the running cost of the orphanage to ensure that the children have all the facilities they require to meet their needs. The additional costs include some of the wages of the security guards, maids, teachers, principal, the transportation costs of any goods and the general maintenance of the building. These are important aspects of the running of the orphanage and the orphanage cannot run successfully without them. With your support these children will be encouraged to achieve their dreams and break the cycle of poverty.

Individual Sponsorship

Your donation of £40 will be going towards the looking after of one child, this is on a one-to-one level. You will be receiving a profile of your child which you will be sponsoring for the coming year and receive quarterly updates from the child. The costs will go towards the child’s education, healthcare including replenishing toiletries, clothing, and meals (3x meals and 1 snack daily). With your support these children will be encouraged to achieve their dreams and break the cycle of poverty.
